Learning Objectives
To provide the basic knowledge and competence for the professional practice of Geologist in the field of water resources, urban planning, engineering works and risk prevention.
Prerequisites
Basic knowledge of Physics, Mathematics, Geology
Teaching Methods
Lectures with use of blackboard and video-projector. Videolectures and webinars. Lab and field practicals. Seminars on specific topics by external scientists and researchers. Field trips.
Further information
Attendance of lectures is strongly recommended
Type of Assessment
Written intermediate tests based on multiple choice quizzes on the program topics. A written report must be prepared on the lab and field practicals. In the oral exam the student will be required to answer some questions related to main topics covered in the course. The critical ability to discuss the topics addressed in the course will then be evaluated.
Course program
Introduction: introduction to the course, geological risks.
Principles and processes: hydrological balance, applied hydrology, river hydraulics, geotechnical properties, hydrogeological properties, soil mechanics, rock mechanics, river processes, underground water circulation, groundwater and aquifers, landslides.
Applications: investigations and monitoring, engineering use of rocks and soils, slope stabilization, hydraulic works, dams, wells and hydrodynamics, foundations, road infrastructures, road pavements, tunnels, techniques of excavation and support in rock and soil
Practicals: engineering geological investigations for the assessment of the stability problems affecting a building, planning and execution of field investigations, engineering geological mapping, analysis and representation of data. Basic soil index properties, inclinometer piezometer and permeameter, laser scanner, infrared thermography, GPS and drone survey, seismic microtremors, radar interferometry.
